new post time..
which is to say, thank you all for reading my FFF. it came out better than i could have hoped, and wow. so thanks again. but i think i've attention-whored enough on it (but if you haven't read it, go do it! now! there will be a quiz..) and as such, it's time for a new post.
and i can't say anything that hasn't already been said about Katrina. i'm afraid of what's going to happen to the south now that the people who were poor enough that they couldn't leave the area with a storm on the way..where are they supposed to go now? no house, no insurance, no job, no belongings. i read a stat that said a million are now homeless. where are they going to go once they're no longer allowed to stay in one of the sports stadiums they now inhabit? what's the impact on my insurance given that i'll end up absorbing some of the cost of rebuilding? what can one girl in kansas do?
i am a hopeful person, and i must be. it's not some blind optimism, but i find i must be hopeful because it makes it possible to deal with the things that are completely out of my hands. i can feel that there is or will be someone smart enough, compassionate enough, to save us all from ourselves (and frankly, this administration).
someone is trying to extort one of my employees.
my electric bill is obscene.
the front page of today's paper says most of the inhabitants of america are in favor of teaching creationism in the classroom. i don't want my tax dollars going to teach crap to children as opposed to something we have some evidence for. i mean, if it's fairy tales we like, then why not just use one of the disney films that litter our culture like so many diapers left on the side of the road? that way, we don't have to waste any more time or money on curriculum development.
who are these people in favor of this? i know one, and he's a mouthbreathing fuckstick. as are Phil Kline and Rick Santorum.
i'm grumpy tonight. i'll get better. i'm still posessed of hope, for some inexplicable reason.

i did meet someone interesting today, a buddhist nun. she was young (today was her 26th birthday), smiling and calm. i watched her give a talk tonight on the importance of realizing how fortunate, and free, really, we are. her name was damo, and she shared her birthday cake with me, a total stranger. hooray for good people.

at times like this i think its important we're all hopeful. maybe it doesn't help those in need, but maybe it can, and can it hurt?
perhaps so. i tend to see things in a darker light, and it's often hard for me not to be sardonic, or even a little jaded about things. i knee-jerk and get defensive, and oh. it's a mess. so when i feel hopeful, it's as meaningful as inner peace is to some (which i find to be a complete flight of fancy, but hey), and i try to hang onto it, and sort of soak my mind in that feeling so i can keep it a little while.
It is sort of scary that we are more backwards today than in the 20s...how can this possibly be???

someone very dear to me once told me (i was ranting about the apparent lack of "fair" in my being bipolar) that we cannot dispell the darkness, we can only bring down more light. maybe one of these days i'll figure out what he meant, but in the interim, i have it written on a little piece of paper i keep tacked up over my bed.
about herge's blog (which i love love love), anytime something dramatic and tragic happens, it seems all the much more worse when it happens near you. don't believe me? regardless of the severity of said event. so it seems natural that americans are going to freak out over NOLA. and the rest of the world can have empathy for us, or not.
but i suppose i can only reiterate this point: you can't fight nature in that sense. it's the chutzpah of mankind to think that we're impervious something like the weather. and don't fault those who can't get out. really. like grandmaster flash said, "you got to have a car in this land of milk and honey"..

Earlier this year I took some dharma & meditation classes at a local Buddhist Temple. They were taught by Buddhist nuns and after just two weeks I contemplated shaving my head and running away. Buddhism has been tremendously helpful to me.
I literally just got back from a doctor's appointment in which we talked about whether to get a blood pressure monitor. Then i read the previous comment. These spammers are pretty damn clever.
i think the hypertension is made worse by the realization that i find the guy in the top left even scarier than the one in the top right. Now thats scary enough to bounce anyone's blood pressure.

What is Science?

Science cannot say anything about them because there is no way to test their existence experimentally.
It is exactly like the relationship of science to art. Some people think plastination is disgusting while others think the man who created it is a genius. Whatever you opinion, we can all agree that we cannot answer questions of artistic merit using physics or geology. In exactly the same way, we cannot use biology or astronomy to figure out whether or not God exists.
